Rick Owens

Avant-Garde Luxurious Grunge

About Rick Owens

Rick Owens is an American fashion designer, well-known for avant-garde luxurious grunge fashion pieces. Owens’s career started in 1994, when he launched his first fashion-line, selling to one of the hippest retailer boutiques exclusively on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles. Before that, his career path did not dissolve so straight in the beginning. After he had dropped out of Otis College of Art and Design, he had taken a course in pattern cutting at Los Angeles’s Trade Technical College and had worked in the fashion industry, designing copies of designer clothing.

Luckily his career took a turn in 1994 and evolved fast. Only seven years later, in 2001, he expanded and relocated his production to Italy. He gained momentum that same year when French Vogue published a photo of Kate Moss wearing one of Rick Owens Leather Jackets. With the help of Anna Wintour and American Vogue, his first show at New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2002 season was sponsored.

In 2003 Rick Owens moved to Paris from where he operates his business till today with his companion Michèle Lamy, whom he married in 2006. Over the years Owens has been honored with several fashion awards, published multiple books, and nowadays also established an interior line.

Rick Owens Knowledge Base

  • What is Rick Owens DRKSHDW?

Rick Owens DRKSHDW is a diffusion line launched by American designer Rick Owens in 2005. It offers a more approachable, streetwear-inspired take on his avant-garde aesthetic—focusing on everyday wearability while retaining the brand’s signature edgy, gothic undertones.

  • Why is Rick Owens called the Lord of Darkness?

Rick Owens is often nicknamed the “Lord of Darkness” because of the strong association his work (and persona) has with darkness, gothic aesthetics, and avant-garde rebellion in fashion. His collections are dominated by black, gray, and muted tones, creating a moody, shadow-like atmosphere. His designs embrace elements of death, decay, and the macabre while translating them into high fashion. Early collections in the 1990s already had that raw, distressed, and “dark” edge that set him apart. Early collections in the 1990s already had that raw, distressed, and “dark” edge that set him apart. Owens himself has a very distinctive look: long black hair, often dressed in black, projecting the image of a gothic high priest of fashion.

  • Why is Rick Owens so expensive?

Rick Owens is expensive because of the way his collections are made and the values behind the brand. His pieces use premium materials such as Italian leather, silk, cashmere, and high-grade denim. They are produced with expert Italian craftsmanship in artisanal factories, ensuring quality and detail. The avant-garde designs—including oversized coats, elongated sneakers, and architectural tailoring—require advanced techniques that are difficult to execute.

  • Who is Rick Owens married to?

Rick Owens is married to Michèle Lamy, a French designer, businesswoman, and creative force in the fashion world. Lamy is widely recognized as Owens’ muse and collaborator, with a signature gothic style featuring tattooed hands, gold teeth, and dramatic jewelry. The two met in Los Angeles in the 1990s and have been partners ever since, both in life and in art. Beyond her work with Rick Owens’ brand, Lamy leads her own cultural platform called Lamyland, working across fashion, art, and music. Together, Owens and Lamy are regarded as one of fashion’s most iconic and avant-garde couples.
