DETAJ is an independent Japanese jewelry label founded by designer Takayoshi Yamanami in Osaka in 1995. Known for handcrafted rings, necklaces, bracelets and objects with a raw yet precise material presence, DETAJ approaches jewelry through experimentation, structure and the inherent character of metal.

The story of DETAJ began while Yamanami was working in fashion as a buyer. Unable to find jewelry that reflected what he was looking for, he started making pieces himself. What began as a personal search gradually developed into DETAJ and a practice that has continued for more than three decades.

Material sits at the centre of Yamanami’s creative process. He describes the starting point as a dialogue with the material: understanding how metal behaves, testing its limits and allowing its properties to influence the final form. Repeated experimentation creates surfaces, textures and structures that retain a strong sense of the process through which they were made.

This approach gives DETAJ jewelry its distinctive character. Ornamentation is deliberately restrained. Instead, Yamanami searches for beauty within construction, functionality, proportion and the physical qualities of the material itself. Inspiration comes from everyday life and subtle observations rather than fixed seasonal themes, allowing individual pieces to develop through an intuitive relationship between idea, hand and material.

Every DETAJ piece is handmade in the brand’s own atelier in Japan. Silver forms an important part of the collection, often appearing alongside gold, leather and different surface treatments. The handmade process means finishes can vary slightly between individual pieces, giving the jewelry a material individuality that is integral to DETAJ’s character. Current works range from minimal silver forms to rings with braided, frosted, bandaged and sculptural surfaces.

DETAJ’s designs are created without gender as a defining parameter. Yamanami’s intention is more personal: jewelry should connect with the individual wearing it. Rings and other pieces often feel closer to small wearable objects or sculptures, shaped by the relationship between metal, structure and the body.

The label has also developed creative relationships with designers who share its interest in material and craftsmanship. DETAJ has collaborated with Uma Wang and Rigards, bringing Yamanami’s approach to metalwork into dialogue with fashion and eyewear. The continuing collaboration with Uma Wang, for example, combines her restrained aesthetic with DETAJ’s structural approach to jewelry, producing pieces conceived almost as sculpture for the body.

DETAJ and 24TH OF AUGUST

DETAJ is closely connected to 24TH OF AUGUST, the independent avant-garde fashion store in Osaka led by Yamanami. His roles as jewelry designer and fashion buyer have developed alongside one another since the 1990s, creating a natural exchange between his own work and his selection of independent designers from Japan and around the world.

The relationship helps place DETAJ within a wider creative context. The same curiosity that led Yamanami to make jewelry because he could not find what he wanted can also be seen in the highly individual selection at 24TH OF AUGUST: an interest in designers, craftspeople and objects with a strong material identity and personal point of view.

More than thirty years after its foundation, DETAJ remains rooted in the same process: observing, experimenting and working directly with material. Rather than treating jewelry primarily as decoration, Yamanami explores what can emerge from the structure, function and character of the object itself.
