About Sacai

Sacai is a Japanese fashion brand that has carved out a unique niche in the global fashion landscape with its experimental, hybrid approach to design. Founded in 1999 by Chitose Abe, a former pattern cutter for Comme des Garçons and Junya Watanabe, Sacai was born from a desire to reconcile the dualities in modern life—function and form, tradition and innovation, the ordinary and the avant-garde. Abe launched Sacai from her home in Tokyo shortly after the birth of her daughter, initially focusing on a line of knitwear that challenged conventional silhouettes.

Abe’s experience at Comme des Garçons profoundly shaped her design philosophy. Rei Kawakubo, the founder of Comme des Garçons, is known for her nonconformist, intellectual approach to fashion, and Abe inherited this spirit of rebellion against standard design norms. However, Abe’s vision for Sacai was distinct. Where Kawakubo embraced abstraction and deconstruction, Abe sought synthesis. She pioneered what has come to be known as “hybridization”—a technique where disparate elements are fused into cohesive, multidimensional garments. For example, a single Sacai piece might combine elements of a tailored blazer, a hoodie, and a pleated skirt into one seemingly effortless item.

From its early days, Sacai grew slowly and organically, with Abe maintaining tight creative control. For years, the brand was relatively under-the-radar internationally but garnered a cult following among fashion insiders for its technical brilliance and novel silhouettes. Sacai’s early collections explored the recontextualization of basics—transforming T-shirts, cardigans, and trench coats into complex architectural forms without losing their inherent wearability. It wasn’t about making clothes that looked strange for the sake of art, but about subtly transforming the wearer’s perception of everyday garments.

The breakthrough for Sacai came in the early 2010s, when international stockists and editors began to take notice. Collaborations with luxury retailers like Colette in Paris and Dover Street Market helped place the brand on the global map. In 2011, Sacai held its first runway show in Paris—a major step for a Japanese label—and it was met with critical acclaim. The show introduced a wider audience to Abe’s hybrid garments, including her now-signature splicing of fabrics and juxtapositions of textures. Since then, Sacai has continued to show its womenswear collections in Paris, becoming a fixture of the fashion calendar.

Menswear was introduced in 2009 and has similarly found a loyal following. Like the womenswear, Sacai’s menswear challenges assumptions about utility and structure. Bomber jackets are fused with parkas, or denim vests with wool suiting fabrics, yet the results maintain an ease and practicality that makes them attractive to both avant-garde and mainstream consumers. Sacai’s ability to walk that line—between wearable and conceptual, luxurious and utilitarian—has become one of its defining strengths.

Collaborations have played a major role in the brand’s rise. Abe has worked with a range of partners from different spheres, including Nike, The North Face, Moncler, Levi’s, and even Apple’s Beats by Dre. The Nike collaborations, particularly, have become some of the most hyped releases in the sneaker world, blending Sacai’s layered aesthetic with classic Nike silhouettes like the LDWaffle and the Blazer. These releases often sell out instantly and are resold for multiples of their retail price, attracting younger consumers and streetwear fans to the brand.

Yet despite this growth and increased visibility, Sacai has maintained a sense of integrity and independence that is rare in an era dominated by conglomerates. The brand remains privately owned, and Chitose Abe continues to design every collection herself. She has resisted the pressure to dramatically scale up or dilute the brand’s identity, choosing instead to refine her vision season after season. In 2021, Abe was chosen by Jean Paul Gaultier to design a haute couture collection for his label, a testament to her respected status within the industry.

Sacai’s success represents more than just aesthetic innovation; it is also a quiet challenge to fashion’s often rigid binaries. Through her work, Abe has demonstrated that a garment can be both beautiful and strange, familiar and innovative, masculine and feminine. Her clothing doesn’t offer easy answers—it invites reconsideration of what fashion can be. In doing so, Sacai has not only defined a unique visual language but also reshaped the conversation around modern luxury and the potential of design.
