Daisuke Nishida and the Origins of DEVOA

Before establishing DEVOA, Daisuke Nishida worked as a sports and training instructor. His experience with physical movement, muscle structure and sports taping became an important foundation for the design philosophy he would later develop through clothing.

Nishida began studying how seams, fabric tension and garment construction interact with the body’s natural range of movement. Sports taping was particularly influential: just as tape can support or restrict specific areas of the body, the placement and direction of a garment’s pattern pieces can affect how clothing responds to movement.

This research developed into one of DEVOA’s defining characteristics — complex three-dimensional patterns built around Nishida’s own hypotheses about anatomy and bodily balance.

Anatomy as a Design System

Human anatomy lies at the centre of DEVOA’s design language.

Nishida frequently manipulates proportions and the perceived positions of joints to create a different visual balance. Sleeves, shoulders, articulated trousers and sculptural outerwear can follow unconventional construction lines and become remarkably natural once worn.

DEVOA describes its research as an exploration of the architecture of materials and patterns grounded in hypotheses about the human form. The brand considers how clothing can transform the perceived balance of the body.

Many DEVOA garments reveal their complexity most clearly when worn. Patterns that appear unusual when viewed flat can create fluid, anatomically responsive silhouettes around a moving body.

Nishida has also looked beyond human anatomy when considering proportion. Insects and their elongated limbs and unusual joint positions have served as references in experiments with the relationship between the wearer’s actual anatomy and the proportions suggested by clothing.

Material Research and Fabric Development

Material is fundamental to DEVOA. Material development and pattern construction influence one another throughout the design process. Nishida has worked with specialist textile manufacturers in Japan and Europe, developing fabrics and experimenting with natural fibres, technical textiles and unusual finishing processes.

Collections have incorporated refined wool, silk and leather alongside advanced performance materials and hybrid textile constructions. DEVOA has also worked extensively with Italian textile manufacturers including Faliero Sarti, developing a long-running dialogue around raw materials, finishing and dyeing techniques.

Fabric weight, elasticity, surface, movement and resistance all affect how a DEVOA pattern behaves around the body. Material becomes part of the architecture of each garment.

Natural Fibres and Technical Materials

One of the recurring elements within DEVOA is the relationship between traditional natural materials and contemporary technical fabrics.

Fine wool, silk, leather and other tactile natural materials can coexist with high-performance textiles more commonly associated with technical or athletic clothing. Nishida’s background makes this intersection particularly relevant, bringing considerations of functionality, mobility and physical comfort into the collection.

Technical performance becomes another tool for investigating movement, comfort and construction.

DEVOA’s Aesthetic

DEVOA is often associated with dark and muted palettes, elongated proportions, anatomical seam lines and understated but highly complex construction.

The visual restraint can conceal the amount of experimentation involved. A jacket may initially appear minimal, yet its pattern can contain unusual rotations, articulated sections or deliberately displaced anatomical references. Trousers can manipulate the perceived position and length of the legs. Outerwear frequently combines protective volume with carefully controlled movement.
