Über Suzusan
Suzusan is a Japanese fashion and textile brand rooted in tradition, yet internationally recognized for its contemporary design. The brand is especially known for reviving and modernizing the ancient Japanese textile art of shibori, a traditional manual resist-dyeing technique that involves binding, folding, twisting, or compressing fabric before dyeing it, resulting in intricate, unique patterns.
The story of Suzusan begins in Arimatsu, Japan, a town with a rich heritage in shibori craftsmanship dating back over 400 years. The brand is founded on the legacy of the Murase family, who have been practicing and preserving this art form for generations. The name “Suzusan” comes from a workshop established by the Murase family, with “Suzu” being a traditional female name in the family and “san” a respectful honorific in Japanese.
The contemporary chapter of Suzusan began with Hiroyuki Murase, the fifth generation of the Murase family. Born and raised in Arimatsu, Hiroyuki grew up immersed in the shibori tradition. However, he moved to Europe and studied fine arts in Düsseldorf, Germany. While there, he recognized both the artistic potential and the fading visibility of shibori in the global context.
In 2008, Hiroyuki founded Suzusan GmbH in Düsseldorf to bring this traditional Japanese craft to a global audience through fashion, home textiles, and lighting. By combining the techniques passed down through his family with modern silhouettes and luxurious materials like cashmere and silk, Suzusan offers garments that feel both timeless and avant-garde.
Suzusan’s products are all handmade, often featuring itajime, arashi, and kanoko shibori techniques. Each piece is unique due to the hand-dyeing process. The brand is committed to slow fashion, sustainability, and artisan craftsmanship, standing in contrast to mass-produced fashion. Suzusan’s collections often emphasize minimalism, texture, and asymmetry — typical of both traditional Japanese aesthetics and modern European design.
Suzusan’s fashion collections are known for:
-
Luxurious, high-quality materials, such as cashmere, silk, and wool.
-
Subtle elegance — combining minimalist forms with rich texture and detail.
-
One-of-a-kind finishes, since each piece is hand-dyed, making no two exactly alike.
Suzusan has become a globally recognized brand, with its pieces stocked in high-end boutiques and department stores around the world. Its lighting and home collections have also been shown at design fairs such as Salone del Mobile in Milan.
In essence, Suzusan is a living narrative of cultural preservation and innovation, bridging old and new, East and West, tradition and fashion.
